Wind Stength: 10/15

Air Temperature: 10

Weather: sunny
Max Speed: 21.53 (knots - unless stated otherwise)
Distance Covered: 29 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)

Today was always worth a punt with wall to wall sunshine and a NW breeze forecast so I was on the road at 9.30 heading the 6 miles to Levington Marina. It was a bit nippy after a spell of really mild weather but with only lightish winds it was a longboard day so with a little luck I could stay dry:) The tide was due to be high at 2.30 but when I arrived it was fairly well in and just stayed high for the whole session! I rigged big and the 9.4 was under for most of the time but it was great to be out in the sunshine not feeling cold at all. It was the first time out with my new Chinook boom so had to set it up, my adjustable out rope was too short and I struggled to attach the sail and the front end of the boom was too loose on the mast when I set off so I beat up the river past Levington Creek so I could go ashore to tighten it up. Although the wind was on the light side it was fantastic to be out on the River Orwell as there were many hundreds of waders including a big flock of Avocets:)

I was going to turn at Pin Mill and try to make 20 kts on the reach back but a large ship with several lorries on deck was heading out to sea so I had to do a few runs to let it pass. I did loads of reaches back but didn't get anywhere near 20kts:( I then thought I would sail down to Felixstowe docks and see if it was any windier there. I had to go ashore again to let a small tanker past and then did loads of reaches to the docks catching my best gusts getting a max of 21 kts but not enough to get a good ave. I had been on the water over 4 hours and as the tide was now going out and the wind dropping I beat back to the van to warm up.

With the lovely diesel heater on I soon warmed up eating my dinner, a chocolate bar then de-rigged and headed for home - a nice way to spend a few hours :)
